Swapping Motivation for Momentum

Often we look for motivation to achieve our goals. How many times have we heard someone say ‘I just need to find motivation!’ or ‘I’m just not motivated!’ or ‘Once I get motivated, I will be right’.

 

How about we try a different approach…

 

Next time you are having trouble finding motivation to get started on something, whether it is achieving your fitness, business or personal goals; instead of focusing on finding ‘Motivation’ swap this for building ‘Momentum’.

 

You see, action generates action, and if you can just get started on something little, then you will build the magic of momentum, which is far more powerful than the fleeting and often elusive motivation.

 

Picture an old-school cartoon of a snowball rolling down a hill. It starts off small, but as it picks up speed and gains size and momentum as it gets going, it can turn into a giant avalanche.

 

This is like the power we can generate when we take small daily actions towards our goals. For example you might have a goal to lose 10 kilos. You might have had this same goal for 12 months! But instead of focusing on the big goal, if you focus on the small steps like just getting up 10 minutes earlier to do your morning activation as we call it, you will generate momentum. By starting out your day on the right foot, you then make better choices throughout the day. You drink more water. You eat something healthy at lunchtime. And over time, your momentum builds. The next day you decide to increase your 10 minutes to 15-20 minutes as you found it enjoyable and had a better day.

 

You can see how this snowball effect can build power over time, and all it started with was the small decision to do something ‘little’.

 

So don’t dismiss the tiny actions, as often it’s these baby steps that get you closer to your goal than you think!

Do you need to get fit to do Boot Camp, or flexible before you can do Yoga?

It might sound funny, but so many times we have heard people say “Oh, I need to get fit before I can do Boot Camp!”

or “I am not flexible enough to do Yoga!”

but the truth is that wherever you are starting from now is absolutely perfect, and you will get fit by doing Boot Camp or get flexible by doing Yoga.

It is human nature to not want to embarrass ourselves, or feel uncomfortable, but the irony is that we get people of all levels of ability saying these things before joining our Boot Camps and Yoga…

So it doesn’t matter where you are at now!

When people ask this we always remind them – there is always likely going to be someone fitter and faster than you and there is also someone who is at more of a beginner level then you – it is not about comparing yourself to other people but only to improving yourself. 

That is specifically why we design our sessions the way that we do, so that there are different levels for beginner through to advanced, with harder options for the more advanced and more suitable options for the beginners… That way you can always challenge yourself to the next level… and everybody is so busy concentrating on themselves and what they are individually doing that there literally isn’t time to worry about anything else!

It is also why we have the mantra “Challenge by Choice” and “Honour Your Body” as on different days you will have different energy levels. It is not about smashing yourself every week but training at an intensity that is suitable for you on each session. It is about getting to know your self and your body, and celebrating the small improvements each week that add up to your big transformation.

As our Yoga guruji once said “It is like watching your hair grow – you can’t see it happening but one day you wake up and realise it’s time for a hair cut!”

When you are consistent and just show up each week; everything else is taken care of and you will get there!

So if you are guilty of focusing on perfection not progress, or have been procrastinating getting started until you are ‘ready’ – call yourself out on this ASAP as you are missing out on getting started now and seeing results a lot faster than if you wait until you are ready!

Inspirational Transformations – Kerri

We are so honoured to be a part of such an amazing and inspirational transformation journey with Kerri!! 🙂

From Day 1 Kerri has been proactive, positive, disciplined, determined and in less than 4 months has achieved amazing results. She has not only reached her goals, but kept going and set new goals, continuing to move forward and has completely transformed her healthy habits, lifestyle, mind, body and spirit.

In her Personal Training with Carlie Kerri lost 6 Kilos in her first 6 weeks, then went on to lost 12.5 Kilos by the time of writing her story below, and has now lost a total of 14.5 Kilos by the time we are now publishing this blog post!! (By the time you are reading this she has probably smashed another goal!!) 🙂

You are amazing Kerri, we are so proud of your awesome results, you are a total inspiration and we know that with your positive attitude and exceptional mindset that your new new healthy habits and lifestyle will be long lasting, this is just the beginning!!

Read on for Kerri’s story below:

 

“My name is Kerri – 4 months ago I was at a low point. Overweight, bad diet, unhappy about my appearance and lacking energy for my 3 and a half year old. I needed a change, it was something I had been thinking about for some time, just didn’t know where to start. My sister rang Fresh Fitness and talked to Carlie to tell her of my situation (because I was too scared). Carlie was completely understanding and told her to tell me to come in for a chat. To which I did and from that day, my life changed completely.

My excuse was always the same. How am I going to fit any exercise in to my day? “I’m a full time working mother to a 3 year old and a wife, I don’t have time for that!!” Now I need to do something every day. 1 Hour of exercise out of my day and I feel so much happier, more energised and it’s just a part of everyday now.

Training with Carlie is the best thing I ever started. She is friendly, helpful, fun & motivating – we share recipes and the exercise is always varied and I walk away feeling like I’ve had a great work out. Thanks to her help, I have lost (so far) 12 Kgs. In addition to the exercise, Carlie has helped me with my diet changes, made me start having breakfast and generally gives me great advice and direction to which I follow.

As a lover of all things fashion, I can once again fit in to nice clothes, my family and I have a new healthy diet and I have lots of energy to run around with my son. I am very grateful for the help I’ve had from Carlie and Shea and am looking forward to training and learning even more from them in the future.”

Hot Tips For The Festive Season

Here are a few quick tips to help you stay on track over the festive season:

Allow your body time to relax. For many of us, it is a time of year that can wind up becoming very stressful. With Christmas shopping, extra food preparation, and extra get togethers with friends and relatives, unless we have extra time off from work and our usual commitments, all of this can become very tiring and taxing on our nervous system. Add to that a little extra alcohol and treats that we wouldn’t normally eat, which deplete our body of nutrients and you have a recipe for exhaustion!

So if we could give you one simple hot tip to help you stay calm and centred over the Christmas festive season, it would be this:

Remember to breathe.

So often it is the little things that we forget, we rush around and forget to breathe deeply, and when we stop and pay attention we realise that we are ‘shallow breathing’ which can have a detrimental effect on our nervous system.

So go on and take a nice big breath in… inhale… and out… exhale…

…Repeat this 5-10 times and notice how different and re-energised you feel…

This will help you stay calm and relaxed, so that you remember to make healthy choices for your mind, body and spirit, in the ‘silly season’.

Congratulations to Guy who has been training with Shea and has lost over 12.4 kilos in the past 9 weeks!!

Guy was given a Fresh Fitness gift voucher for his birthday by his wife Gabrielle.

At 58 years of age, Guy has excelled himself. Always up for a challenge, and ready to get to the next level.

 

Here is his story below…

“I was given a Fresh Fitness Gift voucher for my 58th Birthday by my wife due to her concern for my wellbeing.

At the time I carried a few extra kilos weighing in at 102.4 kilos and my fitness had deteriorated to the point I was finding it difficult to walk any distance or up any incline without laboured breathing, my blood sugars were elevated along with my cholesterol levels and blood pressure.

I finally decided to act on the gift voucher after a couple of weeks of procrastinating and was introduced to my personal trainer Shea.

After the introductory session I decided to take up a 12 session plan where I was introduced to a training regime and a balanced diet plan by Shea.

I have been training with Shea for 9 weeks and in that time my fitness level and strength has increased considerably and my weight has dropped to 90kg being 2/3 rds of the way to my goal, with the added benefit of muscle gain, normal blood sugar count, lowered cholesterol levels and an excellent blood pressure reading.

To begin with the exercise and diet plans seemed daunting but now are second nature, my experience training at Fresh Fitness has been enjoyable and I appreciate the encouragement and personal guidance I have received from Shea over the initial few weeks and I am looking forward to further training at Fresh Fitness to achieve my next goal.”

Can you believe that there are less than 6 weeks left in 2013!!

The end of the year is always a busy time, with Christmas parties, Christmas shopping to do, and lots of social events that inevitably pop up and everything tends to either wind down or ramp up as the year comes to an end.

But amidst the Christmas chaos, it is a perfect time to take the time out to stop and reflect on this year, and set new goals for what you want to achieve in the new year.

So, looking back over the past year…

What has changed in the last 12 months?

What hasn’t changed?

What did you achieve in 2013?

What didn’t you achieve that you had wanted to, and why? (Remember there is still time left!)

What do you want to have achieved by this time next year?

What direction do you want your life to be headed in, in 2014?

What are the small daily disciplines that you need to do, to get you one step closer to achieving your goals each day?

“I started yoga with Fresh Fitness two years ago, to try something new and become more flexible.

In the beginning I struggled to touch my toes but after a few weeks I found my flexibility had increased significantly and two years on I can do a tripod headstand without the support of a wall.

I have found that while I still want to increase my flexibility I also crave the relaxation.

Congratulations to Fresh Fitness client Natasha who has been doing Personal Training with Ellyse for the last 6 months and achieved awesome results!

Here is her story below:

“I started training with Ellyse about 6 months ago and as a mother of three who hadn’t done any regular exercise in a long time, I was very apprehensive about my first session.

Ellyse put me at ease straight away and I left my first session feeling proud of what I was able to do and also a little bit sick!!!

During our training sessions, Ellyse seemed to intuitively know how hard she could push me while always making sure that I was successful during each session.

I also started doing Pilates with Ellyse which was great to calm my mind and move my body in a different way to what we did during our sessions.

When I started PT I wanted to lose weight and tone my body. But, Ellyse has given me more than that – she gave me confidence in what my body is capable of doing and a new found pleasure in regular exercise.

I am now working out 3 times a week and have completed 2 fun runs in the last 6 months – something I had always wanted to do but I had never felt I would be able to do.

Thanks Ellyse for your hard work, dedication, encouragement and support!!!”
